Europe » Colourful Folk Painting on Glass
Ref: 5630
Indigenous and quintessential Romanian folk art, country people created these reverse painted ‘icons’ by copying black and white religious prints, what they arrived at what was quite different to the source material, colourful, abstract, simplified, a decorative art work and an expression of joy. Where the print works (German/Saxon) had heads of saints surrounding the central image, the peasant artist drew flowers, much easier to do, more appealing! This one from Transylvania early 20th century and in original grain painted pine frame.
