Europe » "By the Gate" by Sarkady Oil on Board
Ref: 3886
Some 10 years ago knowing my interest in primitive and naïve art a friend drove me out to a village in the Hungarian countryside to visit the aged local painter, Sarkady, in his studio. I bought a few small oils on board including this one.
Some things you buy go straight on for sale and other items often art works you feel you need to think about or something or whatever & for no clear reason they get stored or "racked" - digging this work out of storage today, a village scene, at night, with a man smoking a pipe on a bench by the tall gates, there is a distinct impression that this painting has improved in time and increased in interest, like a wine. It is leant against the wall alongside a Weight and does not look out of place.
