Ref: 4193
A rare folk painted bed bench or "banc lit", made for a marriage in 1910, and in appealing blue, green, red and saffron, with trailing flowers and rows of dots decorating a panelled construction.
There is no seat as such just a drawer compartment into which filled mattress covers and plumped cushions and blankets would or could be arranged.
The front horizontal panel is actually like a drawer front, it pulls out revealing a second floor and this makes the bed almost double the size. You can see the extra legs give this extending section support.
This piece comes from the Szekely region of Transylvania. So it is an ethnic Hungarian example of traditional folk painted furniture.
