Europe » Antique Marriage Chest with Cornucopia & Flowers
Ref: 4397
A superb quality antique folk painted dowry or marriage box, painted pine, dating to around 1820. These boxes come from the Austrian Empire, as it was then, the region around the city of Pardubice in Northern Bohemia in present day Czech Republic. The characteristic blue ground patterning is said to imitate the light and shadow of poplar leaves and the flowers very delicately painted here reflect the meadows of the surrounding countryside. The cornucopia in the central front panel is a particularly nice detail borrowed from the repertoire of the Rococo. A very good condition piece that came recently from a significant private collection.
