Europe » Antique Carved Wooden Saddle
Ref: 4813
One of the more fascinating objects to be found in the mountainous regions of Eastern Europe, sometimes in Romania or the Ukraine, are wooden saddles with a distinctly “Mongolian” look. They are all the more interesting for their chip carved decoration and sculptural form which is extremely ancient and as has been noted by the more than one scholar or collector has affinities with decoration on pottery found in this region in the Bronze Age.
It is plausible that the manufacture of these saddles was tradition bound and as you can find with some other artefacts and dress from these parts of Europe has remained unchanged for many hundreds of years.
This one is very good condition and the carving is quite delicate or fine and this suggest Hucul (the tribe) - it also has well preserved leather additions.
