Europe » Antique Articulated Santos Figure in Original Paint
Ref: 5641
A finely carved ‘saint’ or so-called ‘santos’ figure with articulated limbs and traces of original paint, these wooden models would have originally been part of a theatrical display in a procession or a church tableau and would have been part clothed hence some areas are painted and others not. The kneeling disposition of this figure suggests it may be a donor portrait as one sees in paintings and icons and so a lay figure rather than a saint.
