In some regions the distaffs were unpainted and chipcarved with abstract designs whose meanings were symbolic and traditional.It has long been acknowledged the influence of Russian folk art on pioneers of abstract art such as Malevich and Kandinsky and when these urban radicals ventured out into the remote countryside to seek their primitive influences much as their French counterparts had done in Iberia and via the imports of Africa it is objects such as this spinning tool that they would have seen.
