Delightful Small Marriage Box with Traditional Folk Painting
Ref: 6180
A rare small pine marriage box made for jewellery and keepsakes, inscribed to a bride, ‘Maria’, and dated ‘1871’, this is a fine example of "Harta Folk Art", the village of Harta on the banks of the Danube 100 km due south of Budapest in Hungary, was desolate following the wars against the Ottomans and was re-populated during the 18th century by German farmers from the Rhineland, known as Swabians, by this time, the 1870s, it was a prosperous settlement, where Germans and Hungarians lived, from the 1820s through to the early 20th century, marriage furniture, armoires, boxes, cup-racks and beds were manufactured invariably dated & in this distinctive vibrant carved and painted style on red ochre or dark blue grounds.
Harta folk art is highly collectible & a table top piece like this, easy to accommodate, relatively early and in such good condition especially so.
