Collection of Festive Wafer Stamps
Ref: 2097
A neat collection of small sculptures, these are antique wooden carved stamps for impressing communion wafers and are associated with Easter rituals in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
They come from Romania and probably specifically from the remote Northern region of Maramures. Hand carved and nicely smoothed and coloured by use they are shaped like crosses but more specifically like memorial crosses or gravestones from tombs. One of them has primitive carving of Christ on the cross and another is not a cross but has a curious double bun shape on top and may be meant to represent an Ottoman gravestone. They were probably worn around the neck, two of these have pin holes and the cross form ones have wear marks for twine. The tallest is 14cm x 4cm.
Maramures 18th/19th cent.
H: 14cm (5.5in)
