A curious and fun example of antique folk art from a peasant cottage, a pot rack with 19 hand-carved pegs in two rows and in original blue-green paint. Carved across the top in heraldic fashion two reptilian creatures are confronted waving their tongues - in Eastern Europe and Romania where this piece originated folklore of lizards, serpents and dragons was common, they were called zmeu, zmei, zmey, balaur or smok, powerful beings, sometimes threatening but often guardians of the household, snakes that become dragons, even taking human form to seduce male and female alike.
This is a fun and ethnographically interesting item that could function as key or mug rack in any home.
