Antique Folk Painted Marriage Box with Birds
Ref: 5430
A lovely example of a marriage box from the Hungarian ethnic tribes who lived and live in the central region of Translyvania. The paintwork, reminiscent of embroidery, with birds and in traditional patterns and colours, is likely to be the second painting of the box which itself would have been made and painted first in the early 20th century. It was commonplace to re-decorate a dowry box and give it to the next generation. This box appears to have been the personal possession of the bride Szabo Erszebet or Elizabeth Taylor and inside the lid you can see a collage of personal momentoes and pictures from photos of silent screen movie stars such as Dolores Costello to fascinating views of the town of Cluj or Kolosvar and the butcher’s emporium, Vlad & Co, perhaps she worked there or there were family connections. The collage insidethe box is a work of art in itself.
