Antique Folk Painted Bridal Box with Flowers
Ref: 5957
Superb condition folk painted marriage box dated to 1910, this style of folk painted dowry furniture is called “Matyo” coming from the fiercely traditional Catholic people of Northern Hungary, one of the tribes that make up the Magyar nation. As ever the folk painting imitates the textile art, the Matyo are known for the richness of their embroideries, with gold on dark grounds, harking back to their origins in the Renaissance court of King Mathias, and something of this splendour comes across in this chest.
