Small Early Bacon Settle in Figured Elm
Ref: 5004
A cute-sized English country farmhouse settle with two doors to cupboard up top and two doors to cupboard space below, probably first half of 18th century, made in figured or burred elm with lovely patina and colour. Traditionally these are called bacon settles, owing to the shallow top cupboard, this has hooks within, and would have been used in the old days to hang game or meats, to season & tenderise the flesh. Nowadays these spaces are useful to hang coats & other paraphanalia in the hallway, porch or kitchen. The size and flat back and the wood make this a very desirable version of a bacon settle, easy to accommodate, and for insurance and replacement value you would want to put on it a value more like 7-8000.
