Rare Primitive Country High-Back Chair with Spindles
Ref: 4825
An exceptional and rare English primitive in superb condition, and in the original paint, it has a heavy slab seat with stick legs carved or incised at the base, the upper section is most unusual with turnings typical of late 17th century rather than stick spindles more commonly seen on West Country & Welsh versions.
There is a wider half-baluster turned support at the centre of the back rest flat-sided internally for comfort, the arm-rests have a wonderfully expressive scroll at the ends, whilst the side supports connecting the upper tier to the arm rests are also made from single-curved elements.
It appears to be a one-off model, expect it to raise eyebrows amongst the cognoscenti.
Northern England early 18th cent.
