Portrait in Green Dress with Rose
Ref: 3514
An attractive English naïve portrait of a young lady in green dress sat on a Chippendale style chair before a sash window with vista to a misty English country estate garden. The withered rose in hand may be symbolic suggesting this is a "memento mori" from the days before photography was available to record for posterity the likeness of a departed one.
Apparently a work done on paper then attached to wooden panel then mounted within a pine frame that is boldly grain painted suggesting a date of around 1840 but could be earlier.
English c. 1830-40
