Ref: 3861
Painting on long case clock faces is now an acknowledged branch of folk art - it began in the latter part of the 18th century when metal faces replaced brass and anonymous artists in places like Birmingham and Manchester specialised in the job. This is a good narrative example from the age of James Thomson, Scott and Keats - in each corner is depicted a female personification of the season with charming details including a skater tumbling on ice. On the top piece there is a witty reflection on Time which would have amused the cottagers who owned this piece as an amorous "Rob Roy" figure startles his dog in his bid to "seize the day".
With a little research the name of the artist here could be identified.
