Naive Still Life with Workman’s Ale and Platter
Ref: 5531
A charming small oil on canvas naive still life signed and dated 1890 (?), a humble workman’s platter of lettuce and cheese with a bottle of Bass ale. It could be English but it could be Spanish or French or Italian. The bottle of ale, echoes the painting of the same, in the Folies-Bergere Courtauld, bottom right corner, by Manet. Bass Ale was known throughout the Empire and Europe, it’s mesmeric red triangle label, one of the first brands, was known everywhere and inspired more than one artist from Picasso to Joyce to the unknown artist of this humble daub.
English/Spanish c.1890
