Modern Primitive British School, The Hokey Pokey Stall
Ref: 5324
A terrific contemporary outsider or naive art painting, based a Victorian photograph of children at an ice cream stall in Greenwich in 1885. A Hokey Pokey Stall was an ice-cream booth, in the original photographic source the vendor has his face in shadow, here he’s given a sinister twist, a play on the rather spooky name of the Hokey Pokey man, the whole painting is a little bit dark and dream-like. On the reverse the artist, S. Heaps, has gifted the work to somebody and written ‘do not re-sell for less than £2000’. I hope we are not cursed!
