English Primitive Maritime Scene
Ref: 2096
An early primitive oil painting on pine board.
A harbour or wharf scene with wherries, there are various figures in boats or coracles, and a darker figure of stevedore, ferryman or gondolier to left. It seems English, Wapping or even Great Yarmouth, but it could be a fanciful Venice or Cythera. In spite of the interesting vernacular detail the overall treatment and warm colour harmony indicates a homage in naive style to Claude and to his dream like golden hued harbour sunrises and sunsets. Small, gem like, a neat addition to anybody′s collection of English primitives.
