Antique Oak Marriage Cupboard or Cwpwrdd Deuddarn
Ref: 5975
A superb example of traditional Welsh Country craftsmanship, lavishly panelled but otherwise restrained in decoration and compact it would have stood in the hall and was normally made to celebrate a marriage (they are known in Wales as a “cwpwrrd deuddarn). This one has good colour and is in very good condition with original shelves to interior .
It is so similar to an often illustrated piece that belongs to the Welsh National Folk Museum in St Fagans that I wrote to them to ask if they’d sold it, they said no, theirs purchased in 1936, they still own, and they confirmed that ours must be from the same workshop in Cardiganshire & dated it to 1780-1820.
