Oak Sideboard Dresser with Moulded Drawer Fronts
Ref: 3895
A re-assuringly authentic piece, came out of house in Stratford upon Avon 15-20 yrs ago, and the dealer put it away in storage until now.
John Andrews's description of a similar piece in his British Antique Furniture from 1968 (revised 1989) fits the bill of this example in several respects, "..it looks old. It has sagged slightly towards the middle; the two planks which make up the top have parted slightly. The dresser appears to have a very good colour. A thoroughly desirable piece."
It is not always recognised that the things that make a piece good to the experienced dealer may be seen by others as condition faults. A shiny dresser in a gallery with less bold front turnings than this and no old repairs to the back legs might be deemed superior whilst to others such a piece would lack soul and, in all probability, be a later concoction whose true age had been concealed in the workshop.
There are some bits of moulding replaced on the drawer fronts and the drawers are pine lined which may indicate old restoration but this dresser is not estimated at £7000-9000 like the one in the book from 1989.
