Exceptional Irish Georgian Pine Dresser with Cockleshells
Ref: 3225
An exceptional and historic Irish painted pine dresser in very good original condition. The Galway craftsman were known for the beauty of their dressers and cupboards and often introduced Celtic motifs into their pieces - here the maker demonstrates his skill and no little native wit - the overall proportion and style is an accomplished expression of the fine and austere Georgian or Classical architectural style but here seamlessly combined with indigenous decorative motifs, the symbolic "rope twist" moulding that fits snugly beneath the cornice, the spinning discs that surmount the Greek reeding which frames the sides, but most of all notable, and with biting humour and sense of theatricality, are the humble carved cockle shells that alternate with sashes on the frieze.
