Significant Royal Horticultural Society Commemorative Armchair
Ref: 4310
A mahogany upholstered armchair in original condition with significant carving.
Details to back rest show stylised and symbolic tree and floral designs & to
either side of the central panel in vertical order are the initials “R H S” which points
to the Royal Horticultural Society which was founded in the early 19th century.
The back of the head rest has a carved date, “1887”, and it is likely that this
chair was made to commemorate the Allotment Act of that year which marked a
turning point in English social history. The Act made it compulsory for what at the
time were effectively local councils to provide common land or allotments for the
labouring classes to ‘grow their own’. It was a key moment in a campaign that had been
waged for centuries between the common working man and the landowning
classes.
But imagine this chair re-upholstered in a modern and appropriately floral
design….it would be a novel item to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show or
to decorate a garden lover’s home.
