These chairs were made by professional dowry carpenters and artists for a marriage and would have formed part of a suite of furniture. This type of painted furniture is famous in Hungary and has been keenly collected by admirers for over a 100 years. It was all made in one village east of the city of Cluj/Kolosvar in Transylvania, home of the wealthy Kalota Magyar tribe.
