Primitive Chair in Ash & Oak
Ref: 5666
A good untouched example of a primitive chair type that would normally be classified as from Carmarthenshire, and if not then Cardiganshire, a wonderfully simple construction, flat and spindled uprights are tenoned into a single slab seat below & above to a single piece yoke-form back rest with, as here, decorative scrolled ends. It has nice colour and patina, some wear to back of seat and front right, but at least this reassures us that this chair is original condition and not restored with replaced parts as many of these chairs are. There are examples of this chair type to be found in the Bowens’ book and there is a wonderful example in the national folk museum near Cardiff. Having three legs is rare, and generally indicates 18th century, it also tells us that this chair would have been used in a very humble country domicile with earthen floor. One for those who wish a to build a definitive collection.
