Pair of Arts & Craft Gothic Revival Armchairs

Take a close look at these oak armchairs with provenance to Ampleforth Abbey in Yorkshire and you can see that they are a tour-de-force, you’d expect to see a carved mouse on them or some maker’s mark, every aspect has some special detail or refinement, from the originality of the pierced quatrefoil back splat, to the upwardly tapering round arm supports, and the variation in the chamfered uprights, the grain of the wood is used decoratively, everywhere you look you can see some extra effort has been made to demonstrate wood carving skill and add to the rich detailing in the design, it is as if they were done as a portfolio or masterclass exercise.
