Antique Peasant Marriage Chair with Symbolic Carving
Ref: 5512
This is a rare peasant chair, richly carved with symbolic meanings, the chair formed part of the marriage ceremony and was used by the groom on the day of marriage then afterwards kept in the clean room, with the dowry suite and textiles and rarely used. It is Magyar and comes from the region of Hatag in Transylvania where the folk customs date back to antiquity.
You can see on the back rest of the chair, a carved spinning disc representing the crown of life, above this a cut out love heart, and above that a flower representing fulfilment of love through family life, the notched motifs at the top of the back rest are the eyes of the parents protecting the young family. The seat is also carved with tulips, the characteristic Hungarian symbol, and these are arranged in hemispheres to symbolise the beautiful life the groom will have with the bride.
The chair is restored, sound and clean condition.
