Vintage Folk Painted Dowry Chest
Ref: 6801
Lovely wear and patina on this traditional Kaloteszegi marriage box, it is dated ‘1950’ and signed by the maker, actually we know from our research that the box would have been made by carpenters who would have made a suite of furniture for the dowry, and then the painting would have been done by a specialist painter working with the team. The vibrant design improvises on certain fixed formulae and is an form of imitation of the colours and design used in the local folk costume and embroideries. Ethnic Hungarian and from the countryside around modern day Cluj or Kaloteszeg as they would have called it. Nice and clean, gallery condition.
