Superior Folk Art Painted Pine Marriage Chest
Ref: 7176
The Swabian Germans of the Danubian Plain had settled into this part of Hungary after the retreat of the Ottomans in the late 18th century they were like German settlers generally very well organised and prosperous and this is indicated in the very smart and large dowry chests they commissioned for their brides. This one is dated '1853', the Rococo style reflects the interior decoration of the Catholic churches in Bavaria where they had come from with marble painted effects and neo-classical imagery. Very good condition with large candlebox to interior.
