Superb Painted & Carved Peasant Coffer
Ref: 2973
The carved arc or coffer based on the design of a Roman sarcophagus is the classic very ancient item of shepherd mountain culture furniture found across Europe from the Western highlands of Spain to the eastern highlands of Romania. This is an exceptional example, very good condition, nicely carved with "good luck" or apotropaic pin-wheel rosettes and tree of life symbols and most of all very brightly coloured.
Look at ref. 2971 and also at ref. 2974 and you will see a great difference between some of the English country furniture and that coming from the countryside in parts of Europe mostly in regard to colour decoration.
