Superb Marriage Chest with Tulips
Ref: 5140
A superb example of Magyar folk art, a marriage chest or dowry box (with drawer) from the Komarom region, east of Budapest and south of the Danube, here the boxes are traditionally carved and painted, this one with tulips, the tulip is the traditional symbol of the Hungarian tribes, you’d think the influence came from the 17th vogue for tulips, when bulbs became currency, in Holland, symbolising beauty, luxury, wealth but in fact as most Hungarians will tell you the tulip is an ancient motive of their peoples coming originally from the East and the times of the riders of the Steppes.
This piece is very clean and comes with free delivery within the UK.
