Shepherds Dowry Box with Crosses in Blue & Red
Ref: 5483
A very good example of a traditional shepherd’s or Vlach marriage box, the exceptional carved design and original colour make this a collector piece, worthy of a regional ethnographic museum collection. Locals in the 19th century called these thrones as the boxes themselves were part of the marriage ceremony, the betrothed would sit side by side, blind folded on the box, and while an ox yoke was put over their heads their recited their marriage vows.
A good clean example, made of beechwood in riven planks, these pieces have been treated and always show evidence of old flight holes but from long ago.
