Shepherd’s Carved & Painted Sarcophagus Chest
Ref: 5614
An impressive dowry or marriage chest from the shepherd communities in the hilly and mountainous country of Barony in the south of Hungary, these pieces are made old style from hewn planks of beechwood, the form imitates a Roman sarcophagus tomb, many of which would have littered the countryside since ancient times as part of the necropolis of Pecs, the main town in the region. The brown and black colouring and the geometric carving are also traditional. This one is an earlier example than some with a splendid hand forged metal hasp and it is re-assuringly heavy. Gallery condition.
