A marriage box/travelling trunk from the delta region villages of the Northern Dvina in Archangelsk province in the frozen North. The traditional folk art painting of the region such as can be seen here describes abstract and biomorphic forms not unlike flames, seeds, plumage or insect wing patterns and in colours that are specific to a landscape of permafrost sunsets and spectacles of northern lights, a place where pre-Christian animist beliefs remained strong well into the 20th cent. Traces of old Russian newspaper to interior. Very good and clean condition.
