Pretty Painted Pine Marriage Coffer
Ref: 2384
Some dowry coffers or marriage boxes are just really prettily painted and this is one. The colours and the surface finish is as nice in its way as any celebrated gouache or crayon sketch by Chagall or Modern Master but older and much much cheaper to buy.
The dealer I bought this from in Southern Hungary had had this in his backstore for several years with MUZEUM chalked on it, this meant he liked it and had been keeping it and if you were going to persuade him to sell you would have to give him a bit extra. This is not a con it′s just the sort of thing antique dealers do if they have any empathy with what they are selling. Likewise I have kept this piece myself for a good 6 years or so, it′s customary that one eventually feels it is time to get the bits of work done to it that are necessary and out it.
Probably 1830 ish. Austro Hungarian Empire. Candlebox intact. Original feet all there.
Clean to interior. Some nice original bits of decorative metalwork on it. Hinges replaced. All solid and usable. No woodworn.
Nice as end of bed, coffee table, toy box, etc
Austria-Hungary c.1830
