Painted Pine Dowry Coffer with Flower Panels
Ref: 2713
There is a joyousness to the way some of these dowry boxes are painted and a freedom akin to Picasso's remark that he was trying to unlearn Rubens and the muscle memory of an academic training. You can see this in the free painted wavy lines, the bold colour sense, the way that lines at corners miss, the loose symmetry - all helping the whole thing breath and not look tight and anxious. This one as late as 1936 -after this, the decimation of war, followed by Stalinist social programmes and a whole mind set drops out.
