Painted Marriage Box with Decorative Metalwork
Ref: 5228
An excellent example of marriage box probably Turkoman from the historic lands of Celicia in the Eastern Mediterranean around 200 years old. It is superb condition, the interior with symbolic and colourful painting of organic forms, the front with very well preserved decorative metalwork with, again, motifs of great age, the symbolism all connected to protective magic. If we look to the front lower section we can for example see the 6-pointed star, a device associated with the Armenians long before it became a nationalist symbol for the Jews and of course part of this region long ago was known as Little Armenia.
