Ottoman Bridal Box with Folk Painting
Ref: 6482
A fascinating example of Islamic folk art furniture, a bridal box with traditional decorative metalwork to exterior the strap work describing mihrab forms and evil eye devices which are traditionally associated with protecting the owner and their belongings from possession by ill-spirits. The interior is in great contrast, richly coloured in saffron yellow (the colour of matrimony, since ancient times in the Mediterranean), the imagery on the interior folk painting is highly abstracted, Matisse-like, and describes the earthly paradise, palms framing the tree of life, an optimistic vision of the righteous life.
