Museum Quality Early Painted Pine Marriage Coffer
Ref: 4320
If you are looking for the best of the best, something exceptional, then this painted pine marriage box fits into this category. It is very early with decorative Gothic inscription to Anna Maria and dated 1747. Arcaded chests of this form were made in Swizterland, Austria and Germany during the 17th and the first half of the 18th centuries.
It is rare for pine furniture of this date to survive in such intact state and with the original folk painted decoration. It’s also rare to find a box of such a size being more like a sideboard and nearly two metres long. It’s the sort of thing you are more likely to see in a provincial museum in Central Europe rather than anywhere else.
