Large Renaissance Style Painted Pine Marriage Chest
Ref: 5454
A large pine coffer or marriage chest with three arcaded panels in the Renaissance or Italianate style, the arches are supported by pink and white marble painted reeded pilasters in the Palladian style, and are accompanied within the panels by depictions of sprays of colourful flowers within classical urns, Christian symbols of everlasting life and joy, these larger boxes with compartmented interiors were made for wealthier peasant families and were the dowry of the bride, they normally date to the 17th and 18th century, it is likely that the date of ‘1862’ to the front here in red paint is the date when the box was ‘given’ for the second time within the family and the piece was either later dated or restored at that time.
