Large Red Painted Dowry Box with Folk Symbols
Ref: 3167
This is a typical piece from what was called Galicia and used to be Poland but is now south western Ukraine - ie. it is typical in its size and the large bracket feet. It is really good condition, decorative metal work on the lid and corners is all intact. The front has panels creating the illusion of drawers (which it does not have). The paint decoration is a earthy red grain painting but then with the unusual addition of bold folky abstract symbols - you see not dissimilar marks decorating the outsides of peasant houses most famously in Cicmany, Slovakia.
But there are also a strong echoes of the surrealistic doodling of the Spanish modernist-primitivist Joan Miro.
