Gorgeous Folk Painted Dowry Box
Ref: 3144
A top drawer painted pine peasant coffer from Eastern Europe. It is excellent condition and the painting with this degree of ageing adding charm does not come much better.
This box was made around the end of the 19th century for a marriage and then re-painted by a master painter in 1965 when the box would have been re-used as part of the dowry of (probably) the granddaughter of the boxes original owner. You can just see the older blue decoration in blue around the edges of the box where the more recent paint has worn away.
We have had a good run of boxes from this part of Europe recently but largely from private collections so the supply won't last forever.
