Delightful Folk Painted Mule Chest
Ref: 3496
A folk decorated pine and hardwood marriage box or dowry with single drawer in which the hand painted colours (amongst them pale blues & whites on an earth red base) are toned down through wear to become especially appealing. This is a mule chest so-called as like a mule it is a hybrid in this case between a box and a chest of drawers. This is an early form of furniture dating back to the Elizabethan period. The front panels with the original neo-classical metal pulls and lockplates imitate a 3-drawer chest but only the bottom one actually pulls out - the top is a lid, it is hinged and it opens to disclose a normal coffer with candle tray for keepsakes. We have in the past customised such pieces to become chests but it's a good old job and will add to the price.
