Carved Oak Coffer or Sarcophagus Chest
Ref: 2552
These hewn plank built coffers were often originally dowry chests, a fascinating item of peasant furniture, whose form is based on the stone sarcophagus dating to ancient times, Roman and earlier.
This one is inscribed in accordance with tradition in discs and rosettes and abstract forms. It is in great condition and has an atmospheric creak as you open the lid. Normally these are made of beech wood and most have had plenty of old worm holes. The ones to look for are the oak ones as they are very little effected with this problem, they are rare but this is one.
