Blue, Red & White Tulip Marriage Box
Ref: 3034
One of the most distinctive traditional folk art styles of the Hungarian tribes of Transylvania is represented in this trunk or antique dowry with it's bold and vivid panels showing red and white tulips. Examples of this "Cifre" folk painting are highly regarded and there are examples represented in the National Museum in Budapest.
This is a nice example with carved classical detailing to the front. It dates to the 19th century as is clear from the lock plate and hinges. Later generations often paint over old folk painting but here you can see that this box has been treasured within the community and around 40 years ago the blue ground painting and some of the red highlights were carefully touched in.
