Antique Shepherd’s Coffer with Traditional Carved Motifs
Ref: 6125
A nicely restored beechwood Shepherd’s coffer, this would probably have sat at the bedstead in a very primitive thatched cottage in the highlands of the Carpathians, and been a marriage box or box for personal keepsakes & clothing, hence the traditional geometric carved designs to the front, these harking back many centuries were intended to dispel the so-called evil eye, country people (in these parts especially right up until modern times) believed in spirits of the forests, witches, wizards, and wandering spirits of the deceased who through possession of private items in particular could cause malign influence, illness, barrenness, failure in love or business and other forms of misfortune.
