Antique Pine Marriage Box with St Barbara
Ref: 4382
A delightful and not too large marriage coffer or box dated 1839. Overall very good clean condition and with well preserved folk painted detail in red and blue to front and sides. Of especial interest is the vernacular painting in the central front panel showing St Barbara with her attributes of chalice and windowed tower. In her legend she refuses an arranged marriage and was imprisoned by her father in the tower which she broke free from. In parts of Central Europe where this box comes from she was popular not only as a figure of steadfast faith but is also to this day the patron saint of miners - in Bohemia statues of St Barbara can be found at the entrance of tunnels.
