Antique Painted Pine Box for Military Chest
Ref: 4299
A metal bound and pine box with usefully two doors opening to the front. The blue grey colouring in clean if distressed original condition is really decorative.
This is one of a pair and they were used to transport a military or campaign chest of drawers for an officer - these chests broke down into two halves.
The stencilled words on the top indicate that this piece was bound for or originating from “Fermoy”, a huge British Army barracks town that was established in the 19th century in Co. Cork in Ireland - officers stationed here fought in the Boer and 1st World Wars before the place was abandoned then burned out in the 1920s following Irish Independence. So these boxes may well have seen some history.
We have cleaned them and kept them unwaxed but they could be waxed. The colour unlike in most blanket boxes is on the back as well as front, the doors offer useful storage without making them unsuitable as coffee table or side piece.
