Antique Folk Art Dowry with Bulfinch
Ref: 3791
A top notch example of European folk art dowry or marriage chest.
This one with superb build quality, German but from an area now in Bohemia a little south of Poland - very good condition. On the top the paint is nicely worn where it was used as a seat at bed end probably.
The folk decoration on front and sides is skilfully executed & excellently preserved and depicts flowers and in the centre a bullfinch with date of marriage, "1835". The goldfinch with it's splash of red plumage is a positive emblem seen on peasant marriage furniture signifying the resurrection and the ever-lasting love of Christ and it is likely the bullfinch carries the same signification.
