Antique Carved Shepherd’s Coffer
Ref: 5172
An antique shepherd’s coffer, very nice condition, made as these traditionally were from beechwood, the scroll carved geometric designs to the front are traditional too and mean to corruscate playfully to the eye, be ambiguous regarding foreground and space, and act as a visual net or trap, beliefs in witchcraft, malign forces and the undead were common amongst the peasantry in the mountains of the East & boxes for personal effects would normally be decorated with such devices to deter the ‘evil eye’, most forms of malady in life were regarded as a form of possession.
Nice and clean to interior, no worm and of course cute size.
